Personal recommendation by the blogger...Marlin Stutzman

State Sen. Marlin Stutzman (R-Howe) was recognized today by Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) for achieving an outstanding voting attendance record of 99.7 percent during the 2010 regular legislative session.

"Legislators are elected to be the voice of their constituents at the Statehouse," Long said. "This is often much easier said than done. Because important committee meetings or other critical matters may occur simultaneously while the Senate is in session, there will always be a few occasions when a senator cannot be on the floor when a vote is taken. Senator Stutzman's commitment to the citizens he represents is clearly shown by his excellent voting attendance record."

In addition to votes on bills, there are also votes on amendments, committee reports and procedural motions.
Long commended Stutzman and other senators for working with fellow lawmakers of both political parties.
"Hoosiers should know we made it a priority to work together this session," Long said.
"Every bill that became law received bipartisan support in the Senate and
74 percent passed unanimously."

Marlin Stutzman was the man who got the lifetime gun carry and the ethics bill passed in Indiana

Marlin Stutzman urges reversal of healthcare bill

"Hoosier voters have now learned, Brad Ellsworth is just a go along to get along liberal democrat. The healthcare bill that was passed in Washington this weekend is a train wreck for taxpayers and is the largest power grab by the Federal government in American history. The bill is in violation of the United States Constitution and will only worsen the prospect of any kind of economic recovery. It must be repealed."
Howe, IN - Marlin Stutzman believes repeal is the only way to restore any reasonable tone to the healthcare discussion. "The bill passed yesterday is such a disaster; I honestly do not believe it can be fixed" Stutzman stated. "What Rep. Ellsworth and others have done in passing this bill and ignoring the outcry from Americans is inexcusable."

Stutzman, a small business owner and 8 year state legislator said, "I believe that we have the greatest healthcare system in the world, but it does have problems that need to be addressed. However, the federal government doesn't have the answers. We need to address the real problem, and that is the actual cost of healthcare. We should expand choice and competition and get the lawyers and career politicians out of the equation."

Stutzman has already signed a pledge to work for repeal if he is elected to the United States Senate. "We have to reverse this bill. Hoosiers overwhelmingly oppose this so called 'healthcare reform' bill, and yet Rep. Ellsworth voted with his friends in Washington and against his constituents. This bill is a train wreck for taxpayers and is the largest power grab by the Federal government in American history. It is unconstitutional, and will also do serious damage to the prospect of any kind of economic recovery. The real truth about this bill is that it will cost Americans more, but actually provide much less quality healthcare."

Since Marlin Stutzman has been endorsed by Erick Erickson of Red State

State Senator Marlin Stutzman announces the endorsement of 27 members of the Indiana House

"Alexandria, VA - Today, U.S. Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina), chairman of the Senate Conservatives Fund, commended U.S. Senate candidate Marlin Stutzman (R-Indiana) for being the only candidate in the Indiana Senate race to publicly endorse a one-year ban on congressional earmarks and a Constitutional Amendment requiring Congress to balance the Federal budget.

"I want to commend Marlin Stutzman for supporting true budget reform. It takes a lot of courage to stand up against earmarks and to make the tough decisions necessary to reduce our nation's debt," said Senator Jim DeMint. "Marlin's leadership on these issues is impressive."

U.S. Senate Candidate Marlin Stutzman says NO to earmarks!

I believe there are three other good solid candidates for Senate, none of them named Dan Coats.   This is of course the personal opinion of AmericanVet and not the Republican Party,

Fran Katz deserves her turn at bat. District 19 race heats up!

 Fran Katz Website

I was sorry that I was tied up when Fran Katz held her kickoff for district 19 State Representative race on the 16th of March whereas I was able to attend and blog on Dan Klein's.   So now I am in all fairness giving Fran Katz her turn at bat, so to speak.  First I noted that among the attendees at Buddy and Pal's for the Katz kickoff were State Sen. Sue Landske (my Senator for many years now),  Art Handley, Doc Reinert, Dean and Mikey Jones, Jim and Deb Cuffia, US Rep candidate Rob Pastore, Arron Pinkus, Janet and Lisa Curley, Cornell Raab and Bryan Bodamer.  Whew!  Not a bad turnout.

The following comes from attributed websites in chronological order.

Perhaps you say, so what, I am in Don Lehe's district anyway, why should I care?

Answer:  This next State Congress is going to be in charge of reapportionment of districts and lots of people now represented by Don Lehe may find themselves in District 19 before the 2012 election rolls around.  Also, you should have an idea of the players in the Indiana Primary because many races in November will actually be won or lost in May!  So if you are not in District 19 but border it now, it may belong to you (or you may belong to it depending on your viewpoint) in the near future.  So therefore the wise voter pays attention!!!

So I checked online resources and wound up on NorthwestIndiana.com where this caught my eye:

"RENOWNED SCIENCE LEADER, BUSINESSWOMAN FRAN KATZ FILES FOR DISTRICT 19 GOP CANDIDACY

(February 16, 2010 – Crown Point) Fran Katz, who grew up on a Hoosier Farm and rose to Vice President of Research at American Maize (now Cargill) in Whiting filed her candidacy on Tuesday for the GOP nomination for District 19 State Representative.

Katz is dedicated to fighting corrupt pay-to-play politics and using her considerable business skills and contacts to bring economic development to Northwest Indiana.

Kim Krull, Chairman of the Lake County GOP, said Katz represents the quality of candidate Republicans will field to fight corrupt politics in Lake County so that economic development is revived.

A native Hoosier, Katz grew up on an Indiana farm, worked her way through the University of Indianapolis and received an MBA from the University of Chicago. She is one of the nation’s most respected women in the Food/Agricultural industries and her name is on 13 United States patents.

She served as a leader of the successful Independent campaign to eliminate political corruption from Chicago’s 43rd Ward (population 55,000), and helped defeat long entrenched Democratic Councilmen Paddy Bauler/Danny O’Brien.

Her experience in legislative matters includes twice testifying before Congressional Committees."

I've met and I like Kim Krull, so if she likes Fran that is a plus in my book.  Then I spotted this in one of blogs I now follow (look in my links list) Northwest Indiana Politics aka Pundits:

"A specialist in food and agricultural industries and a former Crown Point mayor may face off for the Republican nomination for the Indiana House District 19 seat.

Fran Katz, 72, of Crown Point, the chief operating officer of the American Society of Agronomy, filed paperwork for the nomination Tuesday in Indianapolis.

Katz, a graduate of the University of Indianapolis and the University of Chicago, said after her boss heard her "gripe and moan" about politicians, she was asked when she was going to put her money where her mouth is and decided to run.

In a statement, Katz said she led an independent campaign to eliminate political corruption in Chicago's 43rd ward and wants to fight pay-to-play politics and bring economic development to the region. She said her name is on 13 U.S. patents and she has twice testified before congressional committees"

Finally, I see today that Fran Katz has challenged Dan Klein to a debate!  Good deal!  I hope there is an agreement and that We The People can see and hear what both of them have to say...the news article from today's NWI Times article is below:

CROWN POINT | Frances Katz, a Republican candidate for the District 19 state representative seat, is challenging Daniel Klein, her Republican opponent, to a debate.

Katz states in a news release that she wants Klein "to debate the issues confronting the State of Indiana and District 19."

Klein said Friday, "I'm open to a debate to discuss what I stand for. I will be looking for a neutral party to run the debate," Klein said.

Katz and Klein are seeking the GOP's nomination to run for the state legislative seat now held by incumbent State rep. Shelli Vandenburgh, a Democrat. -- By Times Staff

Marlin Stutzman - US Senate - Huntington Tea Party Debate

Friday - March 26 - 7:00-9:30 PM
The Huntington Tea Party Candidate Forum was a bridge too far for us so no official blog post coverage.  All five U.S. Senatorial Candidates were there answering questions and visiting with voters.  We need to find the best candidate and show Washington who's in charge!  We The People!!!

Fair warning...I believe that Marlin Stutzman is the best candidate at this time and that is my opinion and is not an official opinion of the Republican Party.   I do know that Marlin Stutzman won the straw poll after the debate.  Stay tuned for a report from an attendee coming soon!

Lake County Right To Life Chairman Len Reynolds emailed me this:

A little baby boy saved today March 23.

We were given the chance to talk to a mom who did not want her 16 yr old to abort.
We were then able to talk to her and got her to the Doctor  (the doctor was very busy and this almost did not happen) and he did an ultrasound and she is having a boy she is 16 weeks.
I told her that many times parents make young girls abort, however her mom and dad
wanted her to have the baby.  She left with an ultrasound picture of the baby!!!
This was very intense and a real battle.
Even though the 40 days is over we still need  to be at pp, please continue to come out!
God Bless
Dee

We that pray need to pray for babies to have a chance at life.  Those who can, give something to the effort.  Donate baby clothes, phones, money, volunteer time, pass on information...all these activities work together to save lives!

Why do I keep talking about the Tea Party Patriot movement on this blog?  Because these are the people who have realized that their country is broken and therefore it is time for them to get up and get out and be part of the solution.   They want the Republican Party to be a party of Constitutional Conservatives and not a bunch of Beltway Boys.   If we are true to our principles they will join with us.

Ronald Reagan would, were he alive and well today, be very likely on tour with the Tea Party Express.  My fellow Republicans, open your eyes and ears!   Tea Party Patriots want the same things Republicans used to stand for, before we fell for the lure of centrist moderate go along to get along mediocre muddle instead of fundamental conservative principles that Ronnie stood for and by which this country was formed and by which we grew and prospered!

I will be posting a few bios on some of the candidates running locally if said candidates send me some good information.  Informed voters make better choices!

My fellow Republicans may not like this but my personal opinion is that Dan Coats has no business running for office in Indiana.   I will tell you why in a subsequent post.  Why did our State leadership want Dan Coats to come back from Virginia?   I just don't get it!  But that debate is for next time...

Why Republicans need to stay on the conservative side of things...

Because the Liberals own the media and the Democrats!  Vision2America post below:

Coward Russ Carnahan Pushes Bogus Tea Party Lie to Media– Claims Prayer Service With Coffin Was a Violent Threat

by Jim Hoft Remember as you read this: There is nothing the democratic-media complex will not do to lie about the tea party patriots or to prop up these horrid leftists who are transforming our country into some kind of quasi-socialist state.

On Sunday night several members of the St. Louis Tea Party Coalition held a prayer vigil at Russ Carnahan’s office for the millions of babies that will be slaughtered under the democrat’s pro-abortion health care bill. We also prayed for the handicapped and the elderly who will be turned away as they face the death panels created by this bill. And, as we stood outside his office in the rain, we prayed for our country and for the democrats in Washington DC who were stealing away our freedom at that very moment.
We brought a coffin with us to represent the millions of Americans who will suffer from inadequate treatment and perish under Obamacare.

(KSDK Photo)
Local reporters from KSDK News Channel 5 showed up to interview myself and others after our prayer service.

KSDK put together this report on our peaceful protest:
In St. Louis, people on both sides of the issue gathered to watch the vote. Those in favor of healthcare reform came to celebrate, those opposed came to mourn.
For the Tea Party protesters, it was a somber night. Jim Hoft says, “We’re sad about what’s going on tonight in Washington D.C.”
And so complete with candles and casket, they held a funeral, grieving over the heathcare changes to come.
Hoft says, “We believe they’re taking away our freedom and this represents death to part of what we’ve grown up with.”
And the tears here were very real. Cynthia Rice says, “It’ll change everything for us.”
After our prayer service we took our coffin and went and prayed on the sidewalk outside of Russ Carnahan’s home.
We prayed for Russ Carnahan. We prayed that God would forgive him for taking away our freedom. We prayed for the babies who will never feel the warmth of the sun or a gentle spring rain. We prayed for the elderly who will die waiting for care because they couldn’t make it past the Obama death panels.
We prayed for Russ Carnahan.
So obviously it came as quite a shock tonight to see that the Carnahan people and the Democratic-media complex had twisted this innocent prayer vigil into some kind of threat against Russ Carnahan.
The Politico reported:
A coffin was placed on a Missouri Democrat’s lawn, another in a string of incidents against lawmakers after their vote Sunday on a health care overhaul.
Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.) had a coffin placed “near his home,” a spokesman said Wednesday evening.
“Carnahan appreciates thoughtful feedback received both in favor and opposition of health insurance reform,” Carnahan spokesman Jim Hubbard told POLITICO Wednesday evening “We can disagree on important issues facing our country without resorting to this kind of thing. Russ Carnahan isn’t going to shy away from the importance of reform when 45,000 fellow Americans died last year due to a lack of health insurance.”
Of course, this is a complete lie.
Russ Carnahan is so frightened to meet with his constituents after his very unpopular vote that he is now lying about a prayer service. This is despicable. Russ Carnahan never said anything when his SEIU supporters beat, kicked and stomped on Kenneth Gladney in a parking lot outside one of his events. These were the same supporters he was sneaking into one of his staged town halls. Instead of apologizing for his supporter’s violence, he is making up stories about peaceful tea party protesters at a prayer service.
This won’t stand. There was a time Russ Carnahan and the Politico could get away with this awful lie. Those days are over. We demand that the liberal cranks at Politico and Russ Carnahan retract their dishonest tea party hit piece.

UPDATE: The Carnahans told reporters that the coffin was left on their lawn. This is an absolute lie. We had a prayer service and then left. The state-run media didn’t bother to follow up on this outrageous lie before they published their hit piece. The coffin is currently in a member’s garage…. Oh, and the protest was on SUNDAY not Wednesday.

Tea Party and Republican Party - Good friends?

The Dan Klein/Brian Bosma event at the Conservative Cafe on Tuesday was somewhat of an eye-opener for me.   Brian Bosma is a very smart and dynamic individual who must be a natural in a leadership role and so Indiana is certainly blessed to have that kind of leadership down in Indianapolis.  Bosma was in Crown Point to help kick off the Dan Klein for 19th district campaign but he had time to weigh in on two important issues:

The tax that isn't - The Indiana legislature, faced with an unfunded mandate to deal with unemployment insurance, passed legislation that would to some extent level the playing field between big and little businesses but would be in effect a tax increase.  But the legislators were able to put this off for a year and the Republicans hope that if they have a majority in both houses they will  be able to "fix" the bill before one penny of tax is levied against businesses.  As I thought, the Republicans managed to turn this into a holding action and so any incumbent who was involved in the process, at least on the Republican side, should be credited with finding a way to put the issue "on hold" for another year.

A Republican majority in both houses, according to Brian Bosma, will find a way to make this situation less painful for Indiana businesses.   Business in Indiana will need all the help it can get, seeing how the Federal Government seems intent upon ruining and then taking over various portions of the private sector.   Obamites have grabbed a big piece of the banking pie and the automobile industry and are about to gorge on health care.   What is next?

Health deform -  Republicans and Tea Partiers alike hope for the Indiana AG will follow suit and file suit against Obamacare as unconstitutional.  Representative Bosma hoped for this action rather than being forced to try to block the bill legislatively.

In any event, the Conservative Cafe has hosted several Tea Party functions and Republican functions and I have seen many of the same people at both kinds of events.   If the Republican Party is in agreement with the majority of the Tea Party folks then we will all look a lot like Reaganites.

Jimmy Carter was so horrible and yet he was followed by one of the best Presidents ever, Ronald Reagan.   Perhaps another statesman will emerge from the Republicans and very possibly in concert with the Tea Party movement to depose Obama in 2012 and save the country from socialist doom.

Dan Klein is a friendly guy with a great handshake but the best thing I heard about him was from an older woman who was off to the side of things sitting and watching.   She told me how Dan Klein had been a good friend when she first moved into the area and that he was just good people.   It would be nice to think that she is correct.   I did meet the young man who is running Klein's campaign and not sure if he wants his name out there right now but he was impressive, very smart and sincere.

I do not know for certain that Dan Klein is the best man for the job for the 19th district and this blog needs to stay somewhat candidate-agnostic during the run up to the primary.   I can say with certainty that there are several good people, people I trust, who believe that he is.

Speaker Bosma speaks on ethics reform in state government as Governor Daniels looks on.

It is also apparent that the majority of the Tea Party folks want to join hands with Republicans in this election.  If we Republicans want grassroots support and heartfelt fervor for a Reagan-style of government then the time is now to reach out and join hands.  I saw a few Tea Party people including Lake County Tea Party leader Mark Leyva and also Pro-Life stalwarts like Lake County Right To Life current President Len Reynolds and his predecessor Cy Huerter.

This Indiana election cycle will put the State Congress in position to apportion and redistrict the state acccording to census numbers.   The Democrats gerrymandered the districts back in 2000 when they had control.   If you want to see a Statehouse that accurately reflects the majority of Hoosiers you will absolutely get up and get out there and vote for the best candidates and find a way to help them win.   This is not simply critical for the National elections but certainly for the State offices as well.

And that is how I see it...

Brian Bosma: Shall we gather at the Conservative Cafe? (with Dan Klein) Plus Jericho March on the 20th

This coming Tuesday the 23rd of March at 5:30 PM CST there is an excellent opportunity to meet the minority Speaker of the Indiana House.  The event is rumored to be an endorsement for Republican Dan Klein for the 19th district race and a chance for Lake County Republicans to meet Brian Bosma and hear about what is going on downstate.  The meeting will probably last about two hours.

The Conservative Cafe is right on Main Street in downtown Crown Point just about four blocks north of the "square" on the North East corner of Main and North.  201 N Main to be precise.  The owners have been hosting Tea Party Patriot meetings once per month, led by Mark Leyva, and hosting a variety of Republican candidates for State and National office.

Speaking of Brian, he has a lot to say about the delaying of the "tax increase" voted on in the Statehouse, that being HB1379 pertaining to unemployment taxes on Indiana businesses.  To quote Bosma per his website:

"Throughout the short session, House Republicans have called for a one-year delay of the unemployment insurance tax increase on employers, the biggest tax increase on employers in state history. On Thursday, House Republicans offered a alternate plan to Senate Bill 23 that dealt solely with the delay of the tax. Conversely, the House Democrat plan added several other provisions to Senate Bill 23 including language that would chip away at property tax protection.

Unfortunately, the proposal was defeated along a party line vote. The Democrat proposal then passed on a party line vote. Senate Bill 23 is eligible for second reading amendments on Monday.

"This is the single most important jobs initiative available this session," said Republican Leader Brian C. Bosma. "The best way to protect and retain jobs for Hoosiers is by delaying the unemployment insurance tax increase for one year. Employers are still recovering from the national recession and delaying this tax increase is key to helping them keep their employees on the payroll."

Last session, the Indiana General Assembly passed House Bill 1379 which increased unemployment insurance tax premiums on employers. No House Republican supported the measure.
Some key facts about why the unemployment insurance tax delay is needed:
  • Over 2 million Hoosier works are employed by a business that will be subjected to one of the largest tax increases on Hoosier employers in history.
  • Nearly $300 million in new taxes will be placed on about 80,000 Hoosier businesses ranging anywhere from $9 to $748 per employee.
  • Over 72,000 of those employers are small businesses (1-49 employees)."

Word from State Senator Marlin Stutzman's camp is that about a dozen years ago, the Unemployment Insurance Fund in Indiana was sitting on multiple millions of dollars which were not being used, and it was continuing to collect fees in order to comply with Federal Mandates. The decision was made before 2000 to cut the fees/premiums being collected from Indiana businesses, due to the extra money in the fund. When the federal government mandates unemployment insurance to the states without funding, it forces state legislators to figure out a way to comply.

The situation that businesses were in for the past decade in Indiana was that all businesses were paying the same fees for this mandated program, but some businesses never used the funds, while others were using it constantly. With the cut in fees from before 2001, the fund was soon in danger of collapse, due to the tough economic times over the past few years, and due to the fact that some businesses were dipping into it much more than what they had paid into it. To make things fair, last session, legislators decided to adjust this Federally mandated system, and instead of hoping for a government bail-out of the fund or of our struggling businesses, Republican legislartors chose to use a system similar to the pay-go principle - businesses that use it more, pay more, and businesses that use the funds less, pay less.

It was an increase in fees for businesses that dip into it seasonally or more regularly, BUT it was a HUGE cut in fees to the majority of small businesses in Indiana. Now, this year, in order to help all businesses, they are even delaying the increase in fees across the state in an effort to help businesses get back on their feet after some hard economic hits over the past couple of years. Again, this is an unfunded mandate from the Federal Government that Indiana had to do something about. It is a mandate from the federal government that law makers here in Indiana decided to take on at the state level, and do the right thing by making the fees fair and equitable across the board.

Marlin Stutzman's official page has a complete list of his postions on key issues in the race.  Those interested in the Senate Race on the Republican side have some interesting decisions to make since there is more than one very qualified candidate for the job.

Nevertheless, the Statehouse has delayed implementation for one more year (they are trying, at least) to give larger businesses a chance to make contingency plans for the change.  That is the word from Indianapolis.  If you come on Tuesday you can ask Representative Bosma what he thinks of the situtation specifically.

The bottom line?  This legislation is supposed to REWARD companies who keep their workers rather than forcing them to help bail out the bigger corporations that do layoffs and firings as part of their business plan.

Come out to the Cafe on Tuesday and get the answers to this and other questions directly from the House Republican Leader,  Brian Bosma!  This is a good chance to interact with a very prominent member of the House and also for District 19 voters to meet and greet Dan Klein.
