Katz versus Klein. Programs, get your programs here!

It all began with an odd phone call a few months back when an East coast polling company asked me a bunch of questions concerning what I thought of several local political races and one of the candidates was Dan Klein.  Dan Klein?  Is he running for anything?  I believe that was in early January?  Late December?  Can't remember for certain.  They asked me about Todd Rokita and a couple of other candidates but Klein stuck out in my mind because I didn't think he was involved in politics anymore.  Habitat for Humanity, right?

No, he was not.  I checked.  I called a couple of people to give them a head's up and forgot about it.
But later on I realized that the Indy Republicans (who in particular?) were testing the waters in District 19.  The polling service was about three blocks too far to the West or so for district 19 questions.  With February came the news that Luke Abbott was withdrawing from the race and Dan Klein was stepping in =Klein in, Abbott out in HD19 while VanDenburgh cries.  Excerpt:  "Lost in the stampede as Evan Bayh runs away from Washington and Democrats in Southwest Indiana play musical chairs to replace him (and then replace Brad Ellsworth, and then replace Trent Van Haaften, and then replace Bob Deig) is the huge developments in House District 19.

Yesterday, extremely popular ex-Crown Point mayor Dan Klein filed to run against freshman Rep. Shelli VanDenburgh after Luke Abbott quietly exited in the last week."  (from Frugal Hoosiers)

Meanwhile, Fran Katz was also running for district 19 on the Republican side and it turns out that Katz and Klein have one of those family feuds developing.   Allan Katz, Fran's hubby, was (apparently) the only CPDC guy who voted against the Plasmatronics deal that was investigated by the FBI back during the days of Klein's one term as mayor of Crown Point.  As of April 1st, that particular issue has not yet gone away.

Some would say that the prestige of being elected to the office of mayor in Crown Point is why the Indianapolis Republicans wanted Klein to run versus Shelli VanDenburgh, the Democratic incumbent.   The article linked above includes a scene featuring Shelli V crying in a hallway.  Tears because she expects an influx of Republican support and monies to push her out the door in November?

The funny thing is that both the pro-Klein and anti-Klein forces both point to his one term as mayor of Crown Point.   So perhaps that record deserves your scrutiny in order to decide whether he is or is not a good candidate for the Indiana House?

It is fair to say that the internet is divided on the issue:  Link and link and link and link and link and...well, you get the idea.   Dan Klein was either a popular mayor or a giant mistake depending upon your point of view/spin/side of the story.

Your friendly neighborhood blogger has had phone conversations with people on both sides of this debate and received emails and etc.   The interesting latest development from my own point of view was a Republican meeting at the beginning of the week where Dan Klein stood up to speak for himself and Fran Katz's husband Allan had come to promote his wife's candidacy.  Since I am a stand-up guy (when I'm not in my comfy chair) I had relayed to Klein's campaign staff a few charges that had been leveled against him by opponents.   So as the meeting ended it was a bit surreal when Dan Klein came up to me, handed me a campaign brochure and said, "I've never been investigated by the FBI."

Interesting.  Well that didn't quite answer all those questions but then again nobody gave me any new evidence one way or the other that hadn't been posted on the internet somewhere already.  Let me say in defense of Dan Klein that he has a couple of campaign staffers who seem like very nice people.   Also, it is very interesting how much Frances Katz knows about the rapid reproduction of oysters for bulk sale.  If this was about Agronomy or being a successful business person Fran Katz would run away with the plaudits as a big wheel in Agronomy circles and a Fortune 500 executive.

By the way, since you really do not care, I had a top secret clearance while in the military and I did get investigated by the FBI.  I remember my aunt calling my mom asking what kind of trouble I was in after a couple of guys in suits showed up at her door and grilled her about my habits as a young person.  Ah, memories!

What do we therefor conclude?  I do not post unsubstantiated rumors but I do not mind posting entries on an online message board that run hot and cold on the race.   I am quite sure Frances Katz was a tremendous management force at American Maize.  Naturally her husband thinks she is the best person for the job.  And Dan Klein?  I would say that your understanding of his record as the head honcho in Crown Point will tell you whether he would be a good State Representative or not.  If you like him as mayor, you will love him as State Rep and vice versa?   If you didn't like him as mayor you aren't going to be a fan of his second go-round in politics.  That's the way I see it!

I live in district 15 so hey, I can't vote for either of them.  But it is kind of tempting to quote from the NWI message board -

"I hear if you turn off the lights in your bathroom, look in the mirror and say Plasmatronics three times, Linda Decker will appear and empty your pockets."

C'mon, no matter whether you are a Klein guy or not, THAT is a funny line!!!

Here comes the lead up to the Primary

Kim Krull reported on the Lincoln Day Dinner

Chairman's Commentsalt Wow! What a great Lincoln Day Dinner this year! Thanks to John Moos and his committee for putting on a spectacular evening. We were proud to have not only the Lieutenant Governor as our guest speaker, but also in attendance were State Treasurer Richard Mourdock, Attorney General Greg Zoeller, and our next Secretary of State Charlie White. We also had most of the US Senate Candidates Don Bates, Dan Coats, John Hostettler, and Marlin Stutzman all enjoying Millie’s chicken and polish sausage! Congratulations to Genny Gasparovic for winning Republican of the Year! Genny has been involved with the Lake County GOP for more years than I am sure she wants me to say. She has run for office, managed campaigns, worked on many committees including the Lincoln Day Dinner committee for several years, is a hard working member of Midlake Republican Women’s Club and also works hard in the Board of Elections office.

In case you missed it, we renamed the Chairman’s Award to the John B. Curley Chairman’s Award for Public Service. Chairman Curley initiated the award a few years ago, and with his inspiration of always being involved in his community (most of the time without anyone knowing) we thought this was appropriate. This year’s recipient was Griffith Council President Rick Ryfa. Rick helped his community through not only a flood but also a tornado in the past year.

Thanks to Kevin Van Linden for organizing our two big raffles: the gun raffle and the Sarah Palin book raffle. And a big thanks to Deb Astor for organizing the basket raffle. Those 3 raffles brought in a large amount of money to help pay for the donut machine. And I would also like to thank Susan Hammond from the Indiana Republican Party and Alex Mele for assisting with ticket sales.

A few people learned a very important lesson these past months. Republicans should vote Republican in primaries. I had several requests from people who voted D in the past primary to authorize them to run as a Republican for local office or as a State Delegate. We need to show our strength and part of that is by voting Republican in the primaries. Since Indiana does not register anyone to a particular political party, the only way we know if you are Republican is by your voting record. I heard all the excuses. “I vote D because we have no one to vote for.” “I vote D because I know they’re going to win in the fall so I vote for the weaker candidate.” Well, ladies and gentlemen, those attitudes will keep us stagnant and will definitely NOT win races. So as I encouraged people to run for office, I now encourage you to support those who have heard and responded to that call. Vote REPUBLICAN on May 4th!

We have had several new faces sign up to run for office this year. As a consequence of that, we have several competitive races in the Republican primary. The next step is to organize get out the vote campaigns which I encourage not only candidates to work on but city and town chairmen as well. There are voter registration forms (registration ends April 4th) and absentee ballot applications on line and on our website. Precinct committeemen need to contact their chairman for walking lists and forms if you need them.

Let’s hope that our increased Lincoln Day Dinner attendance is a sign of great Republican voter turnout not only in the primary but also in the general election. Let’s keep the momentum going to elect qualified Republican candidates to office this year! However you can help, please do so because as ancient Greek philosopher Plato once said, “The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.”

Kim

If you want to work the polls we may still have some openings, please contact the Lake Co GOP

I enjoyed the LD Dinner.   Found out that candidate Scott Burrell's son is getting married the same day our Amanda is getting married!  May 29th...so our family and the Burrell family will not be attending each other's big day.  Why did we go?  Because we (my wife and I) have been motivated since 9/11 to find ways to help our country and since the election of Barack Obama we found ourselves joining the Tea Party Patriot movement and came to the realization that only by identifying the best candidates at the grassroots level could we get the kinds of people needed in office who would not be likely to become Beltway Boys.

You have to get a gut instinct for people.   My gut tells me Kim Krull is the real deal and that the Lake County Republicans are on the right track.   The mess happening in Portage County right now is in part due to "Operation Chaos", a last gasp effort to stop Barack Obama by voting for Hilary in the primaries by normally Republican voters.   It did not work and is now being used to attack good conservatives of being closet Democrats.  Here in Lake County the Democrats managed to put some of their operatives in positions of power but it looks like those days are going, going...

We have some identifiably strong candidates for office in the US Representative district one race now.

Future events as listed in the GOP calendar: The Waffle Breakfast at the Dyer Presbyterian Church‎ - 2501 Hart Street, Dyer, IN‎ - (219) 865-8660‎ beginning at seven AM and forum beginning at nine AM on Saturday the 10th of April is the next chance to hear the Representative candidates speak and answer questions.

In addition to the Liberty Straight Up at Sheffields on Friday night (April 9th) from five to nine PM, there are several other things going on and I will also be posting Tea Party oriented events as we move along.  Naturally also giving out candidate information to help you make your decision.   Be thankful, we get to vote freely for whomever we choose.

First the clouds, then the storm. Fill in your census before it gets warm!

Here is the latest Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce document courtesy of your friendly neighborhood blogger.

People, fill in your census and send it in.  Every resident of Cedar Lake is worth an average of 830 dollars per person per year for the next ten years for the town government.  Now, do you want to send in that form or do you want the Town Council to raise your water rates?

We are now less than a month from the Indiana Primary.  Do you know who you are voting for?  Do you know WHAT you are voting for?   You see, the year after the Census is taken the Indiana Congress gets to determine any redistricing takes place...ten years ago the Dems had the steering wheel and in the State of Indiana they gerrymandered their way to be able to lose the popular vote and still control one side of the Statehouse.

No matter what new rules are in place, the majority makes the final decisions.  So we need to be sure the majority is conservative and Republicans are the only viable hope.

Indiana Senate approves sweeping redistricting reforms

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Indiana lawmakers today approved the Senate Republicans’ sweeping redistricting reforms establishing objective guidelines for creating legislative and congressional districts after the 2010 census and requiring an in-depth bipartisan review of best redistricting practices used by other states.

proposed new senate districts
Map of possible redefined senate districts

District 22’s representative, State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette), supported the measure establishing guidelines “because there has been little direction in either Indiana law or the Indiana Constitution regarding redistricting.”

Senate Bill 80, which passed by a vote of 47-1, will require lawmakers to consider the following factors when drawing future districts:
  • Preservation of traditional neighborhoods;
  • Preservation of local communities of interests;
  • Protection of minority voting rights;
  • Simply-shaped, compact districts; and
  • Respect for county and precinct lines.
Senators also voted 45-3 to approve legislation creating an in-depth bipartisan study of best practices of other states. Alting said Senate Bill 136 would establish the Redistricting Study Committee and task the panel with examining ways to improve the redistricting process, including proposals to establish an independent commission to draw legislative and congressional district boundaries.

“This committee will openly discuss what is and is not working among the other 49 states’ redistricting efforts,” Alting said. “I believe that it’s important to take time to allow Hoosiers the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns on this issue. Then, lawmakers can make decisions that best serve their constituents.”
SB 80 and SB 136 now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

For additional information, background and otherwise, see Secretary of State Todd Rotika’s Web site “Rethinking Redistricting” list of online resources.
~
Even with Republicans trying to make sure that redistricing is done in a more common sense manner, you know that if the Democrats win they will be trying to frustrate the process.  This year's elections could well be the most important of your life!
1)  The White House is filled with some of the most radical extremists imaginable.
2)  If Congress is filled with new, conservative members the liberal left agenda of the Administration will be slowed if not stopped.
3)  In Indiana the general distrust of Democrats has made offices on both the state and federal and even the local level more attainable by Republicans.
4)  Democrats are trying to demonize Tea Party Patriots.
5)  If the Republicans can win the Tea Party votes then Republicans can be in control in Indianapolis AND Washington and perhaps the crazed spending and unfunded mandates and the attempt to stifle opposition and various other attacks on normal Americans will come to an end.
6) Your weapon is your vote.
7) Never fire your weapon with your eyes closed!

Right now is the time for people who care to think about who do vote for and you do that by going to debates and campaign websites and talking to people.  Meanwhile yours truly is doing a little digging into the backside of those nice facades candidates put up.   Some of those four story buildings are genuinely big, lots of offices and a full basement.   Some of them have a one story little bitty shack behind them with a tarpaper roof and a regular call by the police for domestic abuse and all that stuff.  Politics can be dirty work.

But the Republican Senate race is actually pretty easy.   Hey Republicans?

I would like to encourage you by telling you the the four candidates who emerged from the Tea Party movement in the last year for the Republican Senate nomination look like the real deal.   Richard Behney and Don Bates may be political rookies but they are earnest and apparently honest guys.   I would go so far as to say admirable.   However it is likely that the combination of having limited campaign funds and no experience will likely KO them.

Candidates John Hostettler and Marlin Stutzman have a lot going for them.   They are stand up guys who know how to govern and lead others to do the right thing.   Neither of them are phenomenal fundraisers but with the Tea Party votes tending to go to these two and all other things being equal one of them would win.

People, this is where you come in.  Dan Coats is the ONLY candidate in the Senate race who is not a Hoosier any more.  He is a lobbyist.  His record was shaky although he started off well.  But the only thing he has going for him now is money and name recognition.  So remember it...remember he has been a lobbyist and a foreign government representative for this WHOLE LONG Century living the high life in Virginia, a Beltway Boy coming back to get that nice fat empty Senate seat.   Whereupon he would go back to Virginia, hobnob with his other Beltway Boys and the needs of Indiana will recede back into the past just like his residence receded and moved itself to Virginia officially back in 1999,
So let me save you some time.   Bate and Behney are great guys.  I hope they run for State office next round and get some experience.   Your choices are Marlin Stutzman (my favorite), John Hostettler and...well, you know.  We have to get someone on the ticket that the guys back in Indianapolis can comfortably support and both Stutzman and Hostettler can be that guy.

Tea Party friends...I would be glad to support Behney or Bates in the future and I am glad to say that Richard is a great guy and an honorable one.   I frankly believe that Marlin Stutzman is like a Bates or Behney with the experience and track record.   Now I promise you that Hostettler would not be bad either.

So I promise not to say anything about the Senate race for awhile.   But I am going to offer you a deal you should not refuse.  The Lake County Indiana GOP site has a LOT of information.  This Saturday the candidates for the District One US Representative on the Republican side, slated to face off against Porky Pete.

April 10th is the Dyer Waffle Breakfast starting at 7am and the Lake Co GOP will be hosting a US Congress Republican Candidate forum at 9am there. So far we have confirmation from Adam Domkowski, Pete Lindemulder, Ric Holtz, Mark Leyva, Rob Pastore, and Eric Olsen that they will be attending.

Dyer Presbyterian Church‎2501 Hart Street, Dyer, IN 46311-2117 (219) 865-8660 is the scheduled location.

Introducing One Nerve Left and you're on it!

Copying a recent post and then adding this blog to my links page.  Do I agree with everything?  Maybe not.  But surely we all agree Pete Visclosky absolutely must go?!  Now presenting...

(Some bolding will be by me)

Pete Visclosky Costs the People of Indiana $400 Million Dollars by Voting YES to Obamacare.

For all that voted YES This Ones For You

Pete Visclosky removed $25 million dollars from the State’s budget right out of the gate with the new Obamacare law and this is just the first of many costs and losses of revenue (which translates into higher taxes) associated with this disastrous, unconstitutional law.  The money Pete is taking from the State of Indiana will grow in one decade to $400 million dollars. When asked if the healthcare reform bill was constitutional he said that he thought it was and that his wife is a lawyer.  What Mrs. Pete does for a living has no bearing here, but he thought it led credence to his voting in favor of this socialist takeover of 1/6th of our national economy.    He said that if we do not think it is constitutional we always have redress.  That right there folks is Pete Visclosky giving Indiana the finger, doing what he wants to do for his political career and saying, “So sue me.”.

In all of Pete’s January town halls he claimed that Indiana needed this legislation and that it would be very good for us.  When asked about the cost he said it was paid for. When it was pointed out the over $250 million dollar cost for The Doctor Fix was not reflected in the bill he moved right along, never addressing the fact that this legislation would cost America over a trillion dollars. They fudged the numbers, left out The Doctor cost and made sure to sell it as being under a trillion.  This was before anyone knew that the federal government was also including the takeover of education in the form of Pell Grants and student loans. That gem was slipped in at the last minute. Who knew? The money they make from that takeover helps to offset the cost of this program.  Another jewel which he failed to mention is that the Medicaid prescription drug rebates, which Indiana fought hard for as revenue for the State’s programs will now be the property of the federal government. Indiana haveth, Pete Visclosky and the Feds taketh.

And if you as a citizen do not pay up for a health insurance policy, Pete has agreed to the hiring of an additional 16,000 IRS agents who will make sure the feds get their pound of flesh.  Thanks Pete.
Pete never uttered a peep when there was an issue with the abortion language.  He was voting YES regardless of what was in the bill, and no one knew what was in the bill.

Remember Obama and all of the Dems, including Pete Visclosky, saying that one thing that would happen immediately is that children with pre-existing conditions will get healthcare?  THAT LANGUAGE WAS NOT EVEN IN THE BILL.  They had to go back, after the bill was signed by Obama and add it in.  How is that for honesty and being true to America?  The only real accomplishment of this bill is that it creates a framework for the federal government taking over every aspect of your life.
You can read the article here:

“New drug rules to cost state $25 million in 2011” (Bold and italics below are mine)
INDIANAPOLIS | While the most costly provisions of federal health reform won’t take effect until 2014, state officials determined Indiana’s budget will pay a price starting this summer. That’s because the new health law takes money from prescription drug rebates currently paid to state Medicaid programs and redirects those funds to the federal government.

As a result, Indiana will lose $25 million during the 2011 budget year, which begins in July, and as much as $400 million during the next decade, said Anne W. Murphy, secretary of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration.

Kitchell forwarded Murphy’s letter to lawmakers on the StateBudget Committee, including state Sen. Karen Tallian, D-Ogden Dunes, warning committee members there will more bad budget news to come.

“There is still a lot of work to do to evaluate the extra costs imposed on Indiana taxpayers, which will eventually be in the billions of dollars,” Kitchell said.

According to Murphy, Indiana has done better than most states in negotiating favorable rebates from drug companies. This has “enabled Indiana to capture rebates well beyond the minimums established by the federal government,” she said.

But now that the federal government will receive the rebates instead of states, Indiana will lose more money than other states, Murphy said.
Thanks Pete Visclosky. You voted YES to this law because you think that the crooks and cronies in Northwest Indiana have the November General Election sewn up in a bag for you. You voted YES to this legislation that is not only damaging immediately to the State of Indiana, but is the gift that keeps on giving.  Indiana will suffer for decades and longer unless we vote you out of office and hire a true representative come November.

The reality is that you harm Northwest Indiana way more than you ever helped. When you repeated over and over during your January town halls that you were in favor of this federal takeover of 1/6th of the economy, when you repeated how great this will be for Indiana, you failed to explain that the only true benefactors will be the Federal Government.  I am sure you will write some political speech to explain away the consequence you thrust upon the people of Indiana and I am sure you are hoping that the people in Indiana District 1 forget about the financial pain you personally inflicted not only on your constituents, the State of Indiana, but the rest of the nation.

We will not forget what you did Pete and we will fight the corruption that put you in office and keeps you in office.  The people are awake now Pete and things will never be the same for you and your ilk.
The $400 million dollar loss in rebate revenues for the State of Indiana is just the tip of the iceberg.  More pain is coming and you can thank Pete Visclosky.  As of the signing of this unconstitutional healthcare ‘reform’ bill, the people of Indiana, according to Pete, do not deserve to retain the State’s savings from the prescription drug rebates, Pete believes the federal government deserves Indiana’s money.

Mind you that come November, Pete Visclosky will trot out a figure representing the amount of earmarks has has pushed through.  He hopes that no one asks him where that money went.  He hopes everyone thinks that money went to Northwest Indiana.  What he does NOT want you to know is that he gets 97% of his campaign donations from outside of the state of Indiana and that his earmarks are divided up between those contributors who are not companies headquartered in NW Indiana. While meandering through our wallets he holds up a happy face sign and claims that he has brought ‘all of this money back to Indiana.  Do not be fooled by his campaign rhetoric, dig down and find the truth. Find out where that money really went.

The majority  of the earmarks he claimed to have brought ‘home’ really never made it to Northwest Indiana, but Pete loves to claim otherwise. He guided millions of dollars of our money to companies out of his district. Sadly, prior to 2007, Congresscritters did not have to sign their name to earmarks. We will never know how many billions of dollars of earmarks were used to secure campaign contributions over a 26 year career in congress. As soon as they showed some light on earmarks back in 2007 they had a Who’s Who of Porking America, and Pete Visclosky was shown as being # 6 out of 435 representatives.  That is some accomplishment and that was back in 2007.  Since being under investigation for Pay to Play, Pete has drastically reduced his earmark requests, plus there is an election coming in November and he once again, will try to cover the truth with spewing out some ‘evidence’ that he is a good guy, serving Northwest Indiana.

Yeah, right.

There is no mistake that something was and is dirty in DC with Pete Visclosky being investigated by the Department of Justice. Stroll through Taxpayers for Commonsense and see what is up with your representative

Bring your friends and vote in May for the primary election and vote for Rob Pastore.  He is the person who will be a true and ethical representative for US Congress in Indiana District 1.
